Woodstock is a town steeped in history and is situated just to the north of Oxford. It began as a coach stop around the Royal hunting lodge, which later became the site of Blenheim Palace, stately home of the Dukes of Marlborough since the early 1700's. It's most notable occupant was Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of our country from 1941 until 1945 during which time he governed over the victory of WW2. He served a second term between 1951 and 1955. The grave of Sir Winston Churchill is in the Village of Bladon, just 2 miles away
We are a stones throw from the Palace and the closest hostelry to its magnificent main gated entrance.
Oxford City with its colleges, museums and dreaming spires is a short journey away by car or the convenient and regular bus service.
The town has an active local business community and makes provision for most everyday needs of visitors without having to venture too far: Post Office, Supermarket, Newsagent, Cafes, Restaurants, Art Galleries, a Museum along with a wide range of shops and chic boutiques are all situated right on our doorstep in the town centre.
What really sets us apart? Why choose The Punchbowl to spend your time in?
Well, it has to be our warm welcome, exceptional service & genuine hospitality.
We are family owned and run and we care about you - and we are super dog friendly too!!
Our guests tell us that it really does make a difference.
Undecided? - take a look at our reviews or better still, pop in and try us out for yourself. You won't regret it
Our guest room refurbishment...
In January 2019 we signed off a big budget overhaul of our 9 characterful guest rooms. And then came the pandemic which put a halt to all of our plans. In 2021 the scheme was revisited but having steered our way through the most difficult trading conditions in modern times, we had some tough decisions to make. Do we scale the refurbishment back and invest less or do we crack on with the original scheme? We considered all of the arguments, for and against and decided that neither options were right. 'Go Big, or Go Home' - we decided to upscale the refurbishment and completely strip the rooms back to a bare shell and start again. Our contractor, Tugwell's Property Services were appointed and they did a magnificent job. We have found some beams, voids and hidden gems along the way. We opened up unused spaces to make some of the rooms much bigger. Moved doors, raised ceilings and generally maximised the space we have. All whilst retaining the age old charm that the building possesses
Our interior designer, Jo Titchener had great fun stamping her personality on the inn.
We hope you like the rooms and look forward to welcoming you to our lovely inn soon.
